The Knot is buying Zola, its biggest rival. Vendors report rates doubling and fake leads. See the evidence and how to speak up before the deal closes.
Vendors are asking, is The Knot buying Zola? Yes.
The Knot announced it is buying largest rival, Zola, cutting off wedding vendors' escape route, in a deal that still needs U.S. government regulatory approval.
Vendors already report advertising rates that have doubled or tripled, along with fake leads, broken contracts and deceptive business practices. If the Knot–Zola merger goes through, the three biggest wedding planning platforms would share one private equity owner.
The deal comes as the company faces scrutiny on Capitol Hill over its alleged treatment of small wedding businesses, along with allegations of monopolistic behavior, including dramatically raising advertising rates on vendors under its private equity owners. If completed, Zola would join The Knot, WeddingWire, WeddingPro and Hitched under the same owner, private equity firm Permira. Sources: Reuters, New York Post.
What happens to Zola vendors after The Knot acquisition?
For now, Zola has told vendors that pricing and billing will stay the same, but the acquisition would cut off the escape route for vendors abandoning The Knot. The companies say Zola will run as a standalone business “for the time being” (Offbeat Wed).
For years, Zola has been the one major platform where vendors fed up with The Knot and WeddingWire could take their business. Once all three answer to the same owner, vendors would have nowhere left to go when rates rise again. Vendors who lived through The Knot’s 2018 merger with WeddingWire remember how “for now” turned out.
Have The Knot’s advertising rates gone up?
Yes. Vendors report that their rates have more than doubled, and in some cases more than tripled, since The Knot and WeddingWire merged. Invoices and renewal notices reviewed by our team support those reports.
Vendors also report paying very different prices for the same placement in the same market, with longtime advertisers often charged the most.
The company is also under financial pressure. In August 2026, Moody’s cut The Knot Worldwide’s credit rating into junk territory and labeled it a “very high” credit risk (Bloomberg). Vendors worry a heavily indebted company with no remaining competitor will push rates even higher.

Is The Knot a monopoly?
After acquiring Zola, The Knot Worldwide would own all three of the leading wedding planning platforms couples see in AI search answers. A July 2026 index by 5W AI Communications measured how often wedding brands appear in answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews (5W Index).
That combined share is roughly five times the next-highest brand. The same index found about 84% of individual wedding vendors don’t appear in AI answers at all, so vendors depend on these platforms to be found. With 36% of engaged couples now planning with AI, according to The Knot’s own 2026 study, control of these platforms means control of how couples find vendors.
Zola isn’t the first rival absorbed. The Knot merged with WeddingWire in 2018 and bought elopement startup Simply Eloped in 2024, when vendors warned the company was gaining too much control (New York Post).
The 5W index measures visibility in AI answers, not overall market share, which has not been made public.
